Regional Contractor of the Year (CotY) Award

Honorable Mention for "Residential Addition $100,000 to $250,000".

The scope of the project included a one-story addition of an exercise room, remodel of the deck with pergola and a new bluestone patio. Objectives of the project were to add a sophisticated looking, state-of-the-art exercise room that maximized the homeowner's privacy as well as the views of the backyard and the woods that line their property. In addition, the homeowners wanted to design and build a new deck that would fit seamlessly into the surrounding landscape.

Remodeling Challenges & Solutions:

Windows were used to bring the outside in and maintain privacy in the new exercise room. One exterior wall of the new exercise room consists of five arched picture windows that create a faceted, conservatory style look which affords maximum views of the backyard area. Along the wall that faces the driveway and other homes, the windows are mounted high enough to create privacy, while providing plenty of light and a view of the treetops in the distance. On the other sidewall, a French door flows out to the new deck and is flanked by two more arched picture windows.

Excercise room Custom-made interior trim, molding and cabinetry were used to create the sophisticated look and provide state-of-the-art capabilities. This included curved trim around the arched windows and ceiling moldings that combined five different types of molding to achieve the level of detail desired. Custom cherry wainscoting and cabinetry were built along one wall to accommodate a wide screen television and conceal the stereo components. All interior trim, molding and cabinetry were stained a dark brown color and designed to “flow” with the flooring and entertainment unit in the nearby great room and kitchen as well as surrounding exterior landscape.

The new deck is easily accessible to the house through two sets of French doors located at the exercise room and kitchen area. The existing cedar deck was removed and replaced with premium composite decking which is low maintenance and provides a cleaner look. A pergola was added over the deck area to create the sophisticated look the homeowner desired. Lastly, large wide steps lead from the deck to a new bluestone patio, which was added in order to create a natural flow into the backyard.
