The homeowners wanted to remodel their master bath to increase its functionality, update it, and create a luxurious feel. To increase functionality, the homeowners chose to eliminate the Jacuzzi bath they rarely used and replace it with a large steam shower. The original shower, located in the toilet area, was converted into a linen closet. The benefits of moving the shower are twofold. Now, the toilet area has complete privacy. In addition, the new linen closet provides ample storage space which allowed for a uniquely designed vanity.
The style of the bathroom was transformed from contemporary to traditional. The base cabinet storage was replaced with above counter cabinets which also help to frame the new vanity and the double mirrors. In the center, a lighted, glass-fronted cabinet was used to help define the two sink areas and create a focal point to display treasured items. The curve of the custom-built apron vanity creates an elegant look while hiding the plumbing pipes from view. To further the luxurious feel, white marble was used for the countertop and shower bench, white marble-like tile was used on the floor, and white subway tile was used in the shower. Other traditional features include polished chrome sconces, Victorian plumbing fixtures, and decorative glass knobs.
The large blank wall behind the existing vanity created by the high ceiling makes the room feel empty and impersonal. We added three transom windows above the vanity area to lower the focal point in the room and establish a more intimate feeling. The windows were chosen to emulate the traditional look and to maintain consistency with the windows on the front of the home. The vanity was designed to fit the symmetry of the windows with one window above each of the mirrors and the center cabinet. This design brings balance to the room, provides ample light, and introduces a beautiful view of the outdoors.
